Ingredients

Apples. I think Granny Smith apples are the best apples to use for baking but any tart apple of your choice will work. Honeycrisp apples, Bramley, Gala, Pink lady, Fuji, etc are all good apple varieties to use for baking. Brown sugar. Maple syrup can also be used for the apple filling. You would need to taste to adjust sweetness to your preference but the maple will add lovely flavor to the filling. Corn starch.  Cinnamon.  Salt.  Butter.  Flour. All purpose flour/cake flour works well. Note: To turn this into an air fryer apple crisp, add a half cup of oats to the crumble mixture. You can add nuts like pecans or walnuts too.

How to make air fryer apple crumble

Peel the apples, remove the cores and slice into thin slices. Add the apple slices to a large bowl then add a splash of water, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Stir to mix well then transfer the apple mixture to ramekins and place in an air fryer basket. Air fry the apples for 15 minutes at 180ºC/350ºF until the apple are fork tender. While the apples are cooking make the crumble topping. Mix melted butter, flour, sugar and a pinch of salt together with a fork until crumbly in texture. Top the apples with the crumble mixture then air fry for another 10 minutes until the crumble is golden brown and crisp. Remove from the air fryer then serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of Greek yogurt for a healthier alternative.

Can I make this ahead?

To make this dessert ahead, air fry the apples in the ramekins then remove, allow to cool to room temperature and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for up to 24 hours before topping with the crumble mixture and air frying as directed. Any leftovers can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheated in the air fryer.

Can I make this in an oven?

Yes, of course. I would cook the apples with the sugar and a tablespoon of butter until tender then add to ramekins or a baking dish, top with the crumble and bake until the crumble is crisp and golden.
