Helloooooo sweetie!

Errr—I’m talking to the grapefruit. And you! Because I adore you both. So so so much. But this bowl really is my spirit animal. When I think about grapefruit, I think about sitting patiently at the breakfast table as a little tot while my mom prepared for me this delightfully juicy, sweet, and tart fruit sprinkled with sugar on top. It was a staple in our house. From eating them as a child to making wild creations with them as a grown woman, I’m feeling total nostalgia with today’s recipe. I had never tried Winter Sweetz grapefruit until last month (which was national grapefruit month!) and holy moly…it’s how all grapefruit should be. Grown in Texas, they’re perfectly sweet enough to not warrant that childhood sugar sprinkle and so very juicy. Like, you have to wipe your face after you eat it kind of juicy. Would you have your grapefruit any other way?

Citrus in smoothies has been my jam lately. That super refreshing and ever so tart pop of flavor really balances out the sweetness of cherries and banana in this bowl. Avocado lends that token creaminess which is oh so essential not only for nutrition, but for texture and staying power. I think cashew butter would also be delightful if avocado isn’t your thang. You may notice there’s no liquid in this recipe. That’s because of all the fabulous grapefruit juice!! Be sure to segment the fruit over a bowl so you can dump all that juicy goodness into the blender. If you’re new to segmenting (don’t fret, so was I), it’s the key to avoiding the bitterness found in the pith of the fruit. Check out this quick video to sharpen your segmenting skills!

A word about the cauliflower in this recipe. You’ve seen it in smoothies before. Rest assured that I include it in my smoothie each and every day! It adds splendid creaminess and volume without having to add a bunch more fruit. You don’t taste it at all! I promise. I thought this bowl was sweet enough on its own, but if you have a honking sweet tooth feel free to add a pitted date or a splash of maple syrup. As far as toppings go, I love to add extra grapefruit segments, big coconut flakes, and tart frozen raspberries for a pop of color. After the photos I added granola and creamy peanut butter and it was MAJOR.

Now I’m going to go paint my kitchen the color of this grapefruit. Print
